Construction Dumpster Rental for Contractors

Set Up Each Phase of the Build With the Right Roll-Off

A job site runs on two things: a box on the ground and a truck that comes back when it’s full. Miss either and the crew stands around on the clock. BG’s Big Box Service rents construction dumpsters to contractors from Ventura County across the San Fernando Valley and into Los Angeles, using its own trucks and its own bins. Here’s how we’d set up a typical LA project, phase by phase, so the right container is waiting when the debris changes.

Quick Takeaways

  • Concrete and dirt: the 10-yard (2x8x18 ft) takes dirt, concrete, brick, rock, asphalt and sand. It is not a trash bin.
  • Tear-out and roofing: the Lowboy 20 (4x8x18 ft) has two doors, so cabinets, flooring and shingles load at ground level.
  • Big builds: the Highboy 40 (7x8x20 ft) holds about 40 cubic yards, roughly 250 full trash bags.
  • Multiple bins: contractors renting more than one container get a discount, and BG’s will match or undercut a competitor’s quote you share.
  • State rules: CALGreen requires covered construction and demolition projects to recycle or salvage at least 65% of nonhazardous debris.

Multi-Bin Pricing and Tight Job Sites

Rent more containers, pay less per container. BG’s offers contractor discounts on bulk rentals, and if you already hold a competitor’s quote, share it and we’ll match or undercut it.

Daily, weekly and monthly terms are all on the table, which helps a lot when an inspection slips, the framer gets pulled to another job and the bin has to sit on site for another week or two. Tight lots are another story. Every box except the 3-yard runs 18 to 20 feet long, so on a narrow Silver Lake lot where the truck can barely back in, the small one is usually the call.

Demolition and Heavy Debris Belong in the 10-Yard

The 10-yard takes heavy material only. Its sidewalls stand just two feet tall on purpose, because concrete block and wet dirt get loaded by hand and a low lip saves your crew’s backs.

Don’t let the small number fool you. Broken slab is brutally heavy, and a load of it reaches the weight limit long before the container looks even half full, which is exactly why a short, low-walled box like this one exists in the first place. Rock, brick and asphalt can generally share it. Lumber, drywall and bagged trash stay out.

Framing, Roofing and Interior Tear-Out Fit the Lowboy 20

The Lowboy 20 is the box most remodel crews keep on site. Two rear doors swing open, so a worker can wheel a barrow of tile straight in rather than heaving it over a wall.

It measures 4 feet tall by 8 wide by 18 long and holds about 20 cubic yards. Roofing tear-offs, cabinets and millwork, hardwood and tile flooring, a full bathroom gut. That’s its daily diet. When a job also throws off a lot of slab or soil, we’d still put that material in its own 10-yard so neither box fights its weight limit.

Whole-House Guts and Commercial Buildouts Call for the Highboy 40

Go to the 40 when volume, not weight, is the problem. It stands seven feet tall, replaces more than a dozen pickup loads, and most commercial and construction customers keep one on site for one to two weeks while the job runs.

It needs room. Plan on roughly a standard two-car driveway, and expect a permit from the city or county public works department if it has to sit in the street anywhere in LA County. On a tenant-improvement job in a strip center off Victory Boulevard, that’s usually the parking lot. On a teardown in Encino, it’s the driveway, while there still is one.

Sorting Debris Keeps a Project on the Right Side of CALGreen

California wants most construction waste kept out of landfills, and sorted bins make that far easier. Under the state green building code, permitted new construction, demolition and certain additions and alterations must recycle or salvage a minimum of 65% of nonhazardous construction and demolition debris (CalRecycle).

Mixed loads kill that number. Clean concrete and dirt kept in their own 10-yard stay an inert load, which is far easier to divert than a tangle of rebar, drywall and carpet that nobody can pull apart cheaply. Sort early. It costs a few minutes of discipline on site.

Construction Dumpster FAQs

What size dumpster do I need for a construction project?

Match it to the debris. Concrete, dirt and rock go in the 10-yard; remodel tear-out and roofing suit the Lowboy 20; whole-house guts and commercial buildouts need the Highboy 40.

How much does a construction dumpster cost in Los Angeles?

In Los Angeles, rentals typically run $425 to $1,300, set by container size, debris weight and any permit fee.

Can roofing shingles go in a construction dumpster?

Yes. Shingles and roofing tear-off are standard in the Lowboy 20, whose two doors make loading easier. Old multi-layer roofs are heavier than they look, so tell BG’s how many layers are coming off.

Do dumpster companies give contractor discounts?

BG’s does. Rent more containers and the per-bin cost drops, and BG’s will also match or undercut a competing quote you’ve received.

Can I run two dumpster sizes on one job site?

Yes, and on demo-heavy jobs it’s the smart setup: a 10-yard for slab and dirt next to a Lowboy 20 or Highboy 40 for everything lighter.
