Home Cleanouts, Remodels and Moves, Sized to Fit Your Driveway
The garage is full, the spare room is worse, and the curbside cart takes one bag a week. That’s when people call. BG’s trucks bins out of Sun Valley to homes from Sylmar to Ventura County, and a house project is where most people first meet a roll-off. Americans generated 4.9 pounds of municipal solid waste per person per day in 2018 (EPA). A cleanout drops years of that onto the driveway in a single weekend.
Quick Takeaways
- Driveway-friendly: the 3-yard (4x4x6 ft) is built to sit on a standard residential driveway.
- Goes in: old furniture, appliances, clothes, everyday trash, yard clippings, drywall, lumber, tile and flooring.
- Stays out: hazardous materials, chemicals, paint, tires, batteries, electronics and refrigerators with Freon.
- Fill line: everything has to sit level with the top rail so the load can be tarped.
- Rental length: most Valley homeowners keep a 3-yard for two to seven days, and longer rentals are available.
Choosing a Size for a House Project
Most homes need either the 3-yard or the Lowboy 20. The 3-yard residential dumpster holds about what fits in a mid-size pickup bed, which covers a garage clean-out, a closet purge or a small bathroom tear-out.

What You Can and Can't Put in a Home Dumpster
Ordinary household debris is fine; anything toxic or full of refrigerant isn’t. Couches, mattresses, broken dressers, drywall scraps, tile, flooring and bagged trash all go in.
The LA County prohibited dumpster items list is short but firm: batteries, tires, paint, oils, chemicals, asbestos, electronics and any refrigerator that still holds Freon, which covers the old fridge in the garage that nobody has plugged in since the last owner moved out. Haul those separately. The rest is fair game.
Estate Cleanouts and Moving Out on a Deadline
When a house has to be empty by a date, book the bin first and the helpers second. Escrow, a lease end or an estate sale all set a hard stop, and booking the container early ties its delivery date to your deadline.
Estate work runs long. Sorting what the family keeps, what gets donated and what gets tossed eats days, especially in a home someone lived in for forty years and filled one closet at a time. Weekly and monthly rentals exist for exactly that pace, so pick a term that matches the calendar rather than the optimism. Pull donations first. Once furniture is in a roll-off, nobody climbs in to fish it back out.
Yard Debris Can Ride Along or Go Separately
Yard waste is welcome in a residential bin. Clippings, small branches and old landscaping can go in with the rest of a cleanout.
A full yard tear-out is bigger. If a hedge row or a dead lawn is coming out, ask about a dedicated green-waste bin, which can work out more cost-effective for clean organic material. Sod and the dirt clinging to it are heavier than they look, so mention a lawn removal when you call for a quote. Foothill lots in places like Sylmar usually carry more brush and yard debris to clear.
What You Can and Can't Put in a Home Dumpster
Your driveway is almost always the right spot. Private property generally needs no permit, while a container on a public street usually does.
Give the driver a clear rectangle about 10 feet wide and 20 feet long, with 22 feet of open air above it. Move the second car. Trim anything low. Plywood under the wheels keeps pavers and newer asphalt from scuffing, and it’s a cheap fix compared to resealing a driveway after a heavy box has sat on it for a week in the sun.
Residential Dumpster Rental FAQs
What size dumpster do I need to clean out a garage?
Usually the 3-yard. It holds roughly a mid-size pickup bed of junk and fits a standard driveway. A garage packed to the rafters, or one with old furniture, may call for the Lowboy 20.
Can I put a mattress in a residential dumpster?
Yes. Some landfills charge a small surcharge per mattress or bulky furniture item, so tell BG’s how many you have when you request a quote.
Can I put yard waste in a residential dumpster?
Yes. Clippings and small branches can go in with household debris. For a large, clean load of branches, grass and leaves, ask about a dedicated green-waste bin.
Will a roll-off dumpster damage my driveway?
Plywood under the wheels is the best protection. Clear the space and lay the boards down before the truck arrives.
What happens if I overfill the dumpster?
It can’t leave. Debris has to sit level with the top rail so the load can be tarped safely for transport.
